The dynamite days are long gone and nitro-glycerine is too temperamental, so the most common mining explosive used today is an ammonuim nitrate (NH4NO3) based explosive. Abbreviated as AN, it is used as an oxidising agent and is the main component of ANFO, a popular explosive, which is blend of ammonium nitrate (AN) and fuel oil (FO). ANFO is composed of approxiamately 94,3% AN and 5,7% FO by weight.
