One of AEL Mining Service’s core values is to strive to continually improve the sustainability of our environmental performance. This is done through the ISO14001 environmental management system and our commitment to the Responsible Care initiative, which encourages site personnel to take meticulous care of the environment in which they operate.

Across the Group

With 17 businesses in the group, AEL ensures that its environmental policy, standards, programmes and initiatives are rolled out in sites in South Africa, the rest of Africa, South East Asia and South America.

The environmental function reports directly to AEL managing director under the Company Environmental manager. Safety, Health and Environment managers within each of the 16 businesses are responsible for ensuring that environmental management is practised according to the group's requirements and that the initiatives are implemented in each of their business units. Regular audits ensure that AEL’s high standards are maintained.

With AEL’s international expansion, a key challenge is to obtain the latest environmental legislation of the countries in which the group operates, such as Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Tanzania, Ghana, Egypt, Chile and Indonesia and then to comply with this legislation. Further challenges are experienced where local legislation is not as stringent as that in South Africa and hence support services such as local waste disposal facilities are not available.
